PREFACE.

Tills volume, which is a continuation of the one issued by the Society in 1925, brings down the Register of Burgesses and Guild Brethren of Glasgow from the year 175 1 until the passing of the Act of Parliament in 1846 [9 and 10 Vict., c. 17] which abolished the exclusive privilege of trading in the Royal Burghs md.

Prior to the end of the year 1776 the admissions are recor in the minute books of the Dean of Guild, which are now in the custody of the Clerk of that Court, but since January 1. 1777, a separate Register, reserved exclusively lor the purpose, ha kept by the Town Clerk.

The Registers are complete for the period covered by this volume and have been carefully kept, so far as concerns bui entering by hereditary right or by purchase, but no record has 1 preserved of those who received gratis tickets or of those who were honoured with the freedom of the City. Their number must have been considerable, and, while a few names are included in the Roll printed at page .407. no attempt has been made to systematically investigate either the journals or newspapers or the private and public repositories.

For several years after 1751 there are many entries of persons admitted on the nomination of the Provost or other civic dignitary. According to custom, this was a privilege granted to the retiring Provost and Magistrates at Michaelmas in each year, four burgesses beino- named by the Provost, and two each by the three Bailies, the Dean of Guild and the Deacon Convener. The practice continued until 1780, when it was abolished by act of Council dated May 17, experience having shown "that the disposal of such tickets had tended to increase the number of poor on the charity funds of the city."

The outbreak of the American Rebellion in 1775 aIK' tne ';i'l of Saratoga two years later filled the people with apprehension, and Glasgow was one of several cities which offered to raise
