After the abolition of slavery there were two groups of people with separate schools.
. . . Once separated; now united to build a better country and a better community.
In this Bicentennial year the students at Essex High are proud of the fact that these two groups were once divided and are now working together and sharing ideas . . .

DEDICATION
In tribute to an exemplary teacher, the Odyssey Staff of 1975-1976, dedicates this year's annual to Mrs. Luretha Harris. A teacher in the true sense of the word, she has guided innumerable students through the paths of literature, which are parallel to those of life. Giving us our future trades, the tools which lie in the mechanics of our language, she has prepared many different kinds of people for many different walks of life, and prepared us to walk together.

HOMECOMING QUEENS

Homecoming ’75-76 was the most exciting display of spirit seen at Essex. The week began with selling links to the spirit chain and purple and gold day. Fifties day was a tremendous success with members of the student body and faculty dressing in the styles of the fifties. This was an amusing first at EHS. The cheerleaders with the help of the FFA and community leaders, sponsored a bonfire Thursday night, which promoted school spirit for the up coming game. Friday saw Essex High School in a chaos as students worked on their floats and prepared for the pep rally. Friday afternoon the cheerleaders announced a tie in spirit between the Juniors and Seniors. There were more than 15 floats entered in the parade. The Art Class took first place followed by the Sophomores in second. Honorable Mention went to the NHS and the Newspaper.
The weather proved to be perfect for the game between the Essex Trojans and the W & L Eagles. The Trojans were able to pull off the first homecoming victory for the Trojans with a scene of 8 to 6. During the half time activities Paige Mundie and Bertina Harris were crowned Homecoming Queens.
The Junior girls won the powder puff football game by forfeit.
The mood was set for the Homecoming Dance which was held in the cafeteria. Hobbitten Bridge from Richmond provided the music for the Dance. All in All Homecoming at Essex was a tremendous success.

SCA DOES BETTER THAN EVER
This year the members of the SCA undertook several activities to enhance the school life at Essex. The annual presentation of the Homecoming Queens and the Homecoming Dance were a great success. The halftime presentation was preceded by an event that hasn’t been held for several years. Miss Davis, our art teacher, put together with the aid of the SCA a Homecoming Parade displaying many floats from various local organizations and businesses. The Homecoming princesses also rode in the parade. The Homecoming Dance held the next night also proved to be successful. Overall the Homecoming week activ- ities were an enjoyable program. The SCA also spon- sored a food drive which provided several needy families with a little extra for Thanksgiving. We also displayed a float in the Christmas Parade with the cooperation of the Essex Department of Parks and Recreation. Presently the SCA is engaged in revising the Student Handbook which contains various school regulations, school chants, and clubs. There are sev- eral other issues that we hope to enact that will improve the SCA and make it more active in the years to come.

The Future Farmers of America is a national organization of high school students of vocational agriculture. The purpose of the FFA is to prepare lead- ers for tomorrow’s agriculture. The Essex FFA chapter is trying to meet these goals by involving its members in a wide area of activities. These activities include the judging contest such as: Forestry Farm Mechanics, Rifle Shooting, Parliamentary Proce- dure, Crops, Public Speaking, and Tractor Driving. The chapter also pro- vides recreational activities, which in- cludes a recreation night twice a month, plus summer activities. Also the FFA chapter is involved in activi- ties which are beneficial to the com- munity and surrounding areas.
Each year the Essex FFA Chapter takes a group of members to the State FFA Convention in Blacksburg, Va., to help develop their understanding of the FFA and its functions. While there, the members also participate in the judging contest and receive awards which they have won during the year for their work.
We hope that by having a successful year, the Essex FFA Chapter can prove that FFA is a strength ... A Future for America.

FOOTBALL SEASON A BIG SUCCESS
L. to R. C. Bowler, R. Watkins, V. Holmes, D. Bryant, S, Williams, B. Byrd, B. Johnson, not pictured — D. Gaines, W. Holmes, L. Jackson
This year the Varsity Football Cheerleaders with- stood the rain and cold to cheer on the Trojans to their many victories. They boosted school spirit with the help of the football team’s winning sea- son, They should be given a large amount of credit for the activities they carried out during Home- coming week. These activities included the spirit chain, Purple and Gold Day, 50’s Day, and the organization of the Bon Fire, that would not have been possible without the help of the FFA. They sold stocking hats and had a bake sale. This money will to for rain coats for next year’s cheerleaders. The spirit at Essex High was boosted tremendously because of the cheerleaders untiring efforts and the efforts of the football team itself.

COACH OF THE YEAR
This year the Odyssey Staff would like to dedicate “Coach of the Year” to coach Steve Lewis. This is in recognition of his tremendous encouragement to the football team. In his first year with us, Coach Lewis’ efforts helped to increase school spirit to an all-time high. Mr. Lewis was born in North Carolina. When he was five years old, he moved to Cape Charles, Va. Upon graduation, from high school, he received a scholarship to the University of Richmond where he received his B.S. and Masters in Physical Education. He was a graduation assistant at the U. of R. before he came to Essex.
We hope Mr. Lewis will enjoy his position at Essex for many years to come!

Turning things around — a new head coach — a winning season — third place finish. Football at Essex put on a new face for the better in 1975. Faced with a 19 game losing streak dating back to 1972. New head coach Steve Lewis and his assistants, Mr. Jones and Mr. Whitaker set out to change things in a big way. Starting with a stingy defense that yielded only 84 points in 10 games. The Trojans compiled a record of 4 wins — 3 losses — 3 ties. This was good enough for the first winning season since 1968, and an outright third place finish in the nine team Northern Neck District. This also worked the first time since 1971 that the Trojans had finished above ninth place.
Major accomplishments during the year included victories over West Point, Lancaster, Brentsville, and W & L. A tie with arch-rival King George was deemed a moral victory of sorts. Two of the three losses came at the hands of state ranked teams New Kent and Bowling Green (eventually a 10-7 loser to state champ Clintwood in the finals). The Trojans’ wishbone offense garnered only 79 points on the campaign. Week after week it was faced with a new defensive alignment designed to step its thrust at opposing goal lines. With a wealth of offensive talent returning. 1976 should prove to be a better year offensively.
Five players were honored with All-District honors for the year. First Team selectors were; Cornell Cary, strong safety; Jimmy Harmon, center; and Lorenzo Bundy, split end. Second Team selections included Lindsey Booher, tight end and line backer; and Kevin Lankford, punter. Honorable Mention Honors were awarded to Keith Cooke as linebacker.
Although a winning season was the major accomplishment of the year, perhaps a change in attitude among players and students alike was just as important. Community support increased, pep rallies were held before every home game, and interest in the game itself carried over well into the school year. As coach Lewis stated: “A player must set a goal, have confidence in the reality of that goal, and most important, BELIEVE in that goal. If he doesn’t have those three things, there is no hope for him or his team.” Belief in bigger and better things pervades the halls of Essex for football. The Big Mean Purple Machine looms as an ominous figure on the horizon of Northern Neck Football. The top is not far away.

The Essex High J.V. Trojans finished their season by winning their last two games. These wins evened their record to two wins, two losses, and one tie. Offensively, the J.V.’s were somewhat disappointing, displaying an inconsistant offensive attack that produced only 40 points in five games. Three players led scoring with 12 points each; David Allen, Ricky Perry and Dave Baughan, who led in pass receptions.
The J.V. defense was outstanding all season with only one serious letdown at King George. The defense shutout three opponents and produced two safeties for the year with one of the safeties being the margin of difference over an undefeated Lancaster team.
The “little Trojans” displayed a determined, scrappy style of play throughout the season despite being outweighted by every team they played. The J.V.’s provided some fine individual talent during the season and should provide more winning teams for Essex supporters in coming seasons.

The 1975-’76 Trojans finished the regular season number five in the Northern Neck District. They had a District record of 9 wins and 7 loses and an overall record of 11 wins and 7 loses. Jerome Whitaker was the season’s high scorer, averaging 18 points a game. He was followed by Lorenzo “Peanut” Bundy who averaged 14 points a game. Their scoring would not have been possible without the leadership of co- captains Cornell Cary and Leon Darby and the support of William “Bo” Ransome, who made up the remainder of the starting five.
The dedication and spirit shown by Stevie Johnson and William Ransome will be greatly missed as they finish their last year on the squad.
We anticipate a good season next year as we add to our talent with players from the J.V. squad.

FIVE STRAIGHT DISTRICT TITLES
A completely revamped Trojan Varsity Baseball squad overcome the odds and some low spots during the season to finish first in their Division and then won the Northern Neck District Tournament to claim the District Title. The first place finish continued the Trojan’s streak of having won the District Championship or the regular season title to five straight years.
Essex posted a 12-5 record overall for the season but the trail to first place was much tougher than the final record appears. After winning their first three games, the Trojans lost three of their next four to drop to 3-3 in the District. The bottom seemed to drop out when on April 1st. King George blasted Essex 21-6. However, after the 9-7 loss to Northumberland which dropped them 3-3, the Trojans lost one game in their next eight and put together a five game win streak that carried through the District Tournament. Once in, the Trojans put on a miraculous last two innings comeback to defeat Bowling Green 5-4 after trailing 4-0 and then outlasted Washington and Lee 8-7 for the championship. The next week saw the end of the streak as Essex was knocked out of the Regional by Atlantic High 3-1.
Kevin Lankford led the team in hitting with a .320 average and also in RBI’s. Lorenzo Bundy followed at .315 and Lloyd Clark .314. Bundy led in hits with 17. Tim Beamer and Ras Peel in the infield and Clark and Passagaluppi in the outfield provided the team with excellent defense during their senior year. limmy
Harmon, moved from outfield to catching became the top defensive catcher in the District. Other squad
members who started at times were George Johnson, Floyd Beverly, Lindsey Booher, Nick Brizendine, and Douglas Davis.
David Headley and Jody Parr divided most of the pitching with help from Lankford. Parr was 5-1 for the season including the winner in the final championship game with help from Headley. Headley, who pitched in tough luck at times, finished with a 5-3 record, one loss being 1-0 to Rappahannock. He pitched a one-
hitter in the Regional game only to lose 3-1. In 58 innings of pitching he recorded 82 strikeouts.
This squad worked well with Coach Ashton and deserved their fine season. The four mentioned seniors along with William Scott graduated; the rest should help to make a good season in ’76.
Special awards went to Lankford for top batting average, to Jimmy Harmon for “Best Team Effort’’ and to William Scott for “Best Team Spirit”. All Squad members received trophies for their contributions to the championship.

TENNIS A FIRST!
This year is Essex High’s first year for tennis. The team consists of a regular squad and a reserve squad. The regular squad of six players will be competing in school matches. The reserve squad will be having lessons by the coach to improve their abilities in the sport. Practice will begin in April (perhaps late March). Some of the schools we will be competing against will be Christ Church, Brentsville, and Walsingham Academy. The players on the regular squad are John Butler, Barry Somner, Gary Sum- ner, Ricky Volante, Rick Perry, and David Allen. The reserve squad consists of Paul Hilton, Heath Edwards, Rusty Carlton, Bruce Almarode, and Robert Harper. The coach is Mr. Wells.

GIRLS TRACK TEAM 1975
The 1975 girls track team went into the season with only two members having had more than one year of competition. Considering the lack of experience, and the number of ninth graders coming into track for the first time, the season was very successful. The girls put in long hours each day of work on their events with the end result of being runner up at the District Meet and having three relay team placing in the Regional Meet and three other places in individual events.
The members are: Elizabeth Culver, Jo Ann Doane, Donna Sylva, Paige Mundie, Denyce Young, Susan Dishman, Violet Holmes, Robin Watkins, Sharon Williams, Marie Noel, Deb- bie Bryant, Floretta Ashlock, Teresa Haynes, Cheryl Noel, Wanda Stalnaker and Alice Vaughan.

GOLF TEAM 1976
The Essex High School Golf Team is looking forward to a very interesting golf season in 1976 with a much expanded schedule. The team is looking forward with anticipation to matches with four new opponents. The new schools scheduled are for the most part AAA schools. They are Osbourn Park Senior High School in Manasses, Quantico High School at Quantico, Va., York High School at Yorktown, Lafayette High School in Williamsburg. Matches with our regular opponents Christ Church and Gloucester High School have also been scheduled. The team for 1976 will probably be made up of four veterans from last year’s team. They are: Carter Robertson, Ricky Volante, Aubrey Stokes and Paul Hilton. The two newcomers are Heath Ed- wards and Nick Brizendine. Carter Robertson is seeking to retain his number one position on the team that he held last year. Carter went to the State Class A tourna- ment and finished thirteenth in the state.
Aubrey Stokes takes a shot!

GIRLS BASKETBALL 1975
The Essex Trojan Girl’s Basketball team of 1975 con- sisted of the co-captains, Doretta Hickman and Susan Dishman, Phyllis Young, Alice Vaughan and Floretta Ashlock making up the starting five, with Della Wat- kins, Bertina Harris, Emma Gray, Robin Beale, Violet Holmes, Cynthia Fields and Lavern Ross, rounding out the squad.
With only one starter from the 1974 season, the team had many new and inexperienced players but this lack of game know how was aided by a tremendous amount of talent added to a desire to achieve success, which showed up in their season record of seven wins and four losses.
Alice Vaughan was the high scorer for the team with a total of 189 points and was also the District High Scorer.
With the loss of only two seniors the 1976 season should be one where the team will go all the way.
Co-captains; Susan Dishman and Doretta Hickman
L to R; S. Dishman, Doretta Hickman, 2nd row; F. Ashlock, D. Watkins, E. Gray, 3rd row; A. Vaughan, B. Harris, R. Beale, V Holmes, P. Young.

The Odyssey Staff worked hard this to put out the 1975-76 yearbook. Selling ads, writing captions, and meeting deadlines were just part of the experience of putting the yearbook together. Thanks to everyone who helped. We hope you enjoy the 1975-76 Odyssey as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
