Prefatory Note.
IN presenting this Catalog of the Coins and Medals belonging to Mr. Geo. W. Rice of Detroit, Mich., it is only necessary to state that it represents the careful accumulation of over forty years. Mr. Rice started to collect in 1864. He has long been known as one of the leading numismatists in the United States. Many minute varieties in the United States Series which we offer, represent much patient study and research. Some of them, we believe, have never before been offered at auction. The condition is also all that could be desired in most of the great rarities.
The most casual glance through the catalog will indicate to the appreciative collector that Mr. Rice has been very successful in getting together a splendid collection of rare, interesting and beautiful coins. Space is too limited to mention the fine and rare pieces that are offered; they are too numerous. Suf&ce it to say that here is presented a fine oppor¬ tunity for collectors to add to their cabinets many pieces which they have not previously been able to obtain.
Mail bids early to reach St. Louis on or before April 11; after that to Mr. F. E. Ellis, care Chicago Numismatic Society, Room 1123, Masonic Temple, Chicago, Illinois.
