TEXT FROM HORACE: Odes | i

Me, doctarum hederae praemia frontium dis miscent superis; me gelidum numus Nympharumque leves cum Satyris chori secernunt populo, si neque tibias Euterpe cohibet nec Polyhymnia Lesboum refugit tendere barbiton.

Quod si me lyricis vatibus inseris, Sublimi feriam sidera vertice.

The ivy, the prize of learned brows, associates me with the gods above; the cool grove and the lightly tripping bands of nymphs with the satyrs disassociate me from the vulgar throng,

So long as Euterpe withhold not the flute nor Polyhymnia refuse to tune the Lesbian lyre.

And if you include me among the lyric

singers, I shall knock my exalted head

against the stars.
