FANNOUNCEMENT.

SiemeeenLL) C ed LOC

IN presenting our Wholesale Autumn Catalogue of “Bulbs, Plants, Seeds and Implements, it gives us great pleasure to announce that we have added this vear, to our already extensive Plant Establishment, Bulb and Seed “Departments. To many of our customers it will be welcome news when we say, that, by the spring of 1892, we will be able to furnish the most complete list of Plants, Seeds, Bulbs and Implements vet offered. Z

The success that has marked our short career is sufficient reason for us to

continue to do business on the same substantial basis which has brought our name

so prominently before the public, namely: that every article leaving our establishment

shall be in good condition and absolutely true to name; and that prices will be as

low as goods of equal quality can be procured for in any market.

Our name has become so associated with Chrysanthemums, Orchids and Palms, several of the finest varieties in existence having been disseminated from our establishment (such as the Mrs. Alpheus Hardy and Louis Boehmer Chrysanthemums), that we are headquarters for these popular plants, our stock being the largest in the country. Our specialties, for which we are already famous, are Orchids, Cypripediums, Hardy Perennials, Palms, Foliage Plants and Cbhrys-

anthemums.

Should the friends of any of our customers require Bulbs, Seeds, etc., to whom a copy of our retail catalogues would be acceptable, for intimation of the fact we shall feel much obliged.

The United States Nurseries are situated in Short Hills, N. Jon Ot Ha ID), Ly, Ce Western R. R., only 17 miles from New York City.

We are pleased to see visitors at any time. A personal visit will facilitate se- lection of plants and afford an opportunity of seeing the extent of our nurseries.

New Things.

There are many articles offered us from different parts of the world in the line of new and rare choice novelties, but it has invariably been our custom to give each article a fair comparative trial, so that we may actually become acquainted with its true merit and individuality in comparison with other standard sorts. We have now numbers of these so-called new things, some of which prom- ise to be great acquisitions, while others are not desirable enough to retain, thus showing us the necessity of a thorough trial before offering the articles for sale. It has been our custom to offer nothing that we know only by the recommendation and description of others.

CHIONODOXA GIGANTEA. (Giant Glory of the Snow.)

It was our good fortune last year to secure a few hundred bulbs of this grand new variety of Chi- onodoxa for trial from the originators, and we were so exceedingly gratified with the result that we have concluded to plant this year, for forcing, a very large number.

In comparison with the well known variety C. Luciliw, the gigantea certainly is what its name would imply, the flower being at least three times as large. For forcing, either in frames or greenhouses, it is equally desirable and certain of success, Each bulb produces a perfect cluster of very showy star- shaped flowers, at a season when flowers of its color, a rich clear blue, are most in demand. We have secured a large number of this grand variety, which, when once known among florists, will, we feel certain, become as popular as the Freesia or the Milla biflora. Being perfectly hardy, it can be planted outside with safety. It is very pretty for edging or beds. 25 cents per dozen, $1.50 per 100, $12 per 1,000.

WHOLESALE FALL CATALOGUE, 15

Hardy Perennials or Herbaceous Plants.

We make a specialty of hardy herbaceous plants, and devote acres of land to their culture. Dur- ing the past year or two there has been a greatly increased demand for plants of this class, and there is much to be said in praise of them. With a good selection the garden is gay with their blossoms from the time snow leaves the ground in spring, until late autumn. We are continually adding fine novel- ties, both from our special collectors and from other sources.

Many species and varieties have proved excellent for forcing, and others that have not as yet been tried, will undoubtedly prove useful in the same direction. For florists and others purchasing plants to supply cut-flowers, a large number of plants of few varieties are preferable to a few plants each of many varieties.

We send out none but healthy stock, true to name, and sure to give satisfaction. A personal visit to our nursery at any time during the summer is sure to be of interest.

Cypripediums.

It is a well known fact that the Cypripediums are the most easily grown orchids, and that. their flower lasts in perfection longer than any other flower known. This latteris a great recommendation as

a cut-flower, and should lead to their cultivation, in at least a small selection, by every florist. The colors

are rich and pleasing, and they combine well with roses and fine ferns, or in fact with anything they are used with; while if a basket is filled with Cypripediums alone, a unique effect is produced. For culture see our little book, ‘‘Orchids for Beginners,’’ which is sent free on application.

TO FLORISTS.

Our extensive stock includes all the rarer and less known desirable plants in all classes, as well as the commoner sorts which are known to every florist. We will take pleasure in giving estimates for filling greenhouses or will send descriptions of special plants of Palms, Tree Ferns, Cycads, Orchids, etc., which may be wanted.

We are also prepared to make selections of hardy herbaceous plants and bulbs for planting out around surburban residences, in beds and borders, or public parks and gardens, however large. Correspond- ence in regard to matters of this kind is invited.

CUT FLOWERS.

We areat all times prepared to send boxes of cut Orchid flowers, etc., on receipt of a letter or telegram. Some species or other are in blossom at any season of the year, and for special occasions the stock of the local florist is either inadequate or unsuitable. In the autumn and winter when our large collections of Chrysanthemums and Genistas are in blossom, we can supply cut flowers or specimen plants in flower | of almost any description and in almost any quantity. Weare glad to give information regarding what plants are in flower at any time.

WHOLESALE FALL CATALOGUE. 29 e General List of Vegetable Seeds. We wish to call the attention, especially of market gardeners and florists, to our seeds. From per- sonal experience we know the vital importance of purity of stock and high germination. In this

department purchasers may have every confidence in the goods we offer, as every article we send out will be tested both for germination and purity. We have spared ourselves no expense in the prepara- tion of seed testing houses and trial and experimental grounds, and have secured only skilled help, many of whom have spent a lifetime in this business.

In most cases the seeds we offer will represent the new crop of 1891, grown by reliable meu under our personal supervision; but owing to the southern planters requiring seeds before the new crop is ready we give as nearly as possible a complete list of vegetable seeds, and in flower seeds a condensed

list of florists’ flowers.

Quarter pound furnished at pound rate, ten pounds at hundred pound rate, and peck or quarter

bushel at bushel rate.

When seeds are to be sent by mail, eight cents per pound for seeds sold by the pound, and fifteen cents per quart for peas and beans, must be included for postage.
