VOLUME 20 NUMBER 4
Parade, Pumpkin Festival To Draw Big Crowds
The 10th Annual Romulus Pumpkin Festival — to be held in the downtown area along Goddard Road between Shook and Romaine — will run from September 15-17.
On Friday, the festival will kick off with the eighth annual "Parade of Lights" —ashimmering spectacle that will depart from the City Hall parking lot (corner of Wayne and Goddard roads) at 8 p.m., then wind down Goddard to Five Points. Last year's parade was an enormous success enjoyed by thousands of on- lookers, and this year's event promises to be bigger and brighter that ever!
According to the Romulus Rotary Club, which sponsors the parade, prizes will be awarded to the best entry in each of three categories:
° people- and/or animal-powered e motorized e commercial
Following the parade, winners will be
announced at Progressive Hall (11580 Ozga), where refreshments will be served courtesy of the Progressive Club.
For more information (including parade rules), or to download a parade entry form, visit www.romulusrotary.org. The deadline for registration is Wednes- day, September 13.
The remainder of the weekend will feature entertainment, games, contests, hayrides, craft exhibits, and other street- fair attractions — and, of course, pump- kins. You won't want to miss a minute of fabulous, family-oriented fun!

Letter to the Editor
Mayor Not a "Union Man," Says Reader
An open letter to Romulus Mayor Alan R. Lambert:
Mayor Lambert, you claim to be a union person, but yet you want to get rid of union jobs. | heard that you want to replace union janitor jobs with outside contractors. We had nine union janitors, and now we have four left. You want to keep the four we have and outsource the other five union jobs with nonunion workers. If you were worried about attri- tion, you shouldn't have given out 20% raises and your own $10,000 raise, and kept the union jobs here in the City.
Mayor Lambert, this is a union city with blue-collar workers. | hope that, next election, the union workers remem- ber your getting rid_of union jobs. The United Auto Workers endorsed you, the Teamsters endorsed you, and a num- ber of other unions endorsed you, plus the Romulus Democratic Club endorsed

you. | just hope that the union people of Romulus know you're nota union-back- ing person, and let their feelings be shown come election time at the polls.
You're taking care of salaried posi- tions, but not the union brothers and sisters. You took care of the chiefs; now the indians will suffer.
Sincerely,
John Clark
Romulus

District Honors Employees for Reaching Service Milestones
Superintendent Carl J. Weiss wel- comed more than 500 returning Romu- lus Community Schools employees during the district's annual "opening of the school year" program, held in the Romulus High School auditorium. The district's new top administrator was joined by Business and Operations director Sherri Papazoglou, Human Re- sources director Edward Clark, and Curriculum director Tom Dolan.
After introducing himself, Weiss talked about the importance of all em- ployees working together to provide stu- dents and their parents with a "user- friendly" school district.
"You should all strive to be the best parts of our children's lives," he told staff members. "Youcan make their day with asmile and a friendly greeting."
Following Weiss's remarks, Dolan gave an overview of summer MEAP (Michigan Educational Assessment Pro- gram), Education YES! and Adequate Yearly Progress results, and Papazo- glou reviewed the district's current fi- nances. Clark concluded the program by honoring 55 Romulus Community Schools employees with special certifi- cates for reaching significant career service milestones.
Romulus Board of Education presi- dent Celeste Roscoe, vice-president Kenneth Mientkiewicz, and trustee Cheryle Buckley assisted Administra- tive Office secretaries Carole Bales and Robin Omey in handing out the award certificates.

Barth Elementary principal Diane Golka and physical-education teacher Sheila Stasak were pleased to announce that their school's students had once again extended themselves and raised $1,090 for area charities.
"Through our Spirit Week program, we try to recognize five charities each year, and designate each day as a spe- cial fund-raising day for one of the spe- cific charities chosen," Golka explained. "We had special days, such as Crazy Hat Day and Pajama Day, and students who participated in the events solicited contributions for their efforts."
Barth concludedits Spirit Week with an assembly that honored each charity,
The Romulus Public. Library's annual Summer Reading Program drew to a close last month after ter- rific participation from area residents. Nearly 180 children from Romulus, Huron Township, and surrounding
~ areas participated in "Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales," reading for a collective 120,113 minutes.
The end-of-program party, held at the library on August 2, began with an awards ceremony honoring sev- eral youths for outstanding achieve- ments in reading. The honorees in- cluded Aaron Hayse, top reader for grades two through six; and Carson Selwa, the top reader in the "age five and under" division. Each youth who received an award was given a cer- tificate, gift card, and T-shirt.

Several Romulus teens also en- joyed summer reading programs, which concluded with a pizza party. Library spokespersons said they would have liked to have had more local teens join the program or par- ticipate as volunteers. Maybe next year...
The Library would like to thank area merchants like Meijer (Belle- ville), Comerica, Skateland West, and McDonald's for their generous dona- tions to the program.
They also expressed their ap- preciation to all the program's spon- sors — including the Friends of the Romulus Library, the Greater Romu- lus Chamber of Commerce, the Rom- ulus Rotary Club, and the Huron Rotary Club — for their support. 0
